The workshop door opened without a sound.
When Spice looked up, something thin had crept in across the floor through the gap under the threshold . At first he thought it was dust, or a scrap of paper blown in by the wind. But the instant it took shape beneath the workshop’s light bulb, Spice’s hands stopped their work.
It wasn’t paper.
It carried a warmth like touching the back of a hand. A faint pulse . It was a “crawling extra” — long said to arrive in Amencho Town on the day of Yomu, an extra edition made not of paper but of something like thin skin. No type was printed on it; letters appeared, only when needed, as lines like blood vessels rising on its surface. Even Spice was seeing an actual one for the first time.
The extra crawled across the workshop floor as if searching. It skirted a pile of junk parts, deftly climbed over a bundle of bare wiring, and made straight, without hesitation , for the receiver at the back of the shelf.
The receiver began to pulse.
thump . Thump. Thump.
The old casing at the back of the shelf took on body heat and began to flicker. Somewhere far off in the city tonight, countless bearers were hoisting portable shrines onto their shoulders, raising ground-shaking chants — was that heat converting into electromagnetic waves and reaching all the way here, or had the pulse the extra carried transferred itself instead? Spice couldn’t tell.
The extra wound itself around the receiver’s leg and slowly let letters rise to its surface.
Spice knelt and brought his face close to the text.
What was written there wasn’t city news. The exact times of the three mornings Kopo had stopped at the crossing. The length of time Mocchi had spent alone tilling the soil before dawn . A record of one night Keromi had sung, alone, in the empty plaza . The figures were exact — matching, to the second, the log Spice had been quietly keeping himself.
The extra had come to return to Spice the records Spice himself had gathered.
Why the extra knew any of it, Spice couldn’t say. Not knowing, he read the text to the end anyway. The receiver’s pulse slowly settled. The extra’s membrane turned transparent and, before long, vanished as if dissolving into the floor.
Quiet returned to the workshop.
Spice sat in front of the receiver for a while. He himself had been the one gathering the data — and yet he couldn’t explain, no matter how he tried, why it had come back to him from outside. The next morning, and the morning after, his hand paused slightly each time he opened a drawer.
Margin note: The next morning, a thin line remained on the workshop floor, the trace of the extra’s path. The line ran straight from the door’s gap to the receiver — but outside the door, the line had no continuation anywhere.
【Core of the Tale】
- Phenomenon used: the crawling extra, the heartbeat radio
- The story’s hidden theme: a gathered record eventually begins to speak for itself
