The Spring Bridge and the Unseen Guardian

A small river runs through Amencho Town, crossed by an old stone bridge. April 3rd. In honor of “Nihonbashi Anniversary,” the town held its annual “bridge washing,” scrubbing away the grime that had built up on the bridge.

“Alright, if I clean off this railing , the Dragon God should be able to cross more easily!”

Wanting more than anything to be seen by the girls as a “hardworking, devout frog,” Kopo was scrubbing harder than anyone. But in his eagerness , his foot slipped, and he dropped his bucket into the river.

“Aaah! My lucky bucket—!”

Kopo was about to chase the drifting bucket when Tacchi, landing lightly on the riverbank with his long legs, stopped him. “Hmph. Kopo, don’t panic. Read the flow of the river, make the wind your ally. That’s the way of a true gentleman.” Tacchi held his pose and stretched his long legs out to retrieve the bucket, but his hand fell just a few centimeters short. To hide this shortcoming , he quickly covered with an air of profundity : “…No — I choose to let it drift, returned to the blessings of the sea. That, too, has its charm.”

“Feh-feh. You two are washing the bridge — but have you forgotten to wash your own hearts?”

The voice came from atop the bridge — Sonchō, wearing his top hat. He had read in the newspaper that the guest list for the city’s “Spring Garden Party” had been announced today, and it seemed to have stirred memories of the glamorous world he’d glimpsed in his old adventuring days.

“A bridge, you know, isn’t merely a path connecting one side to the other. It’s the bond — the en — that ties past to future, and person to person. Today also happens to be Shisa Day. The Dragon God’s carving on this bridge’s railing is, in a sense, this town’s shisa. It watches over us all.”

Just then, with a great splash, Mocchi arrived from upstream, cradling an oversized wooden carving of a salmon in his arms. “Sonchō! I brought an offering for the Dragon God to celebrate the season’s first catch! This should keep this year’s sumo tournament safe!”

Bipiku and Keromi, watching from the bridge, cheered at the sight of mighty Mocchi. Seeing it, Kopo felt a small twinge in his chest. No matter how hard he scrubbed, it was always strong Mocchi or glamorous Tacchi who ended up in the spotlight.

(I guess I really am nothing…)

As Kopo sank into gloom , Maskman gave his shoulder a gentle pat. “Kopo, look at the railing you polished. The Dragon God’s carving has never shone brighter. Your unseen effort has breathed life into this town’s guardian .”

A warm voice, even through the mask. When Kopo looked up, the polished carving really was catching the morning sun, gleaming gold. The shine looked almost like the Dragon God smiling.

Downstream, Hasshi picked the drifting bucket up in his beak and delivered it to Kopo. “Here you go, hard worker. Mocchi can handle the salmon, but this bucket’s yours, isn’t it?”

Keromi’s singing voice slipped under the bridge, carrying the scent of a new season. There was none of the glamour of a city garden party — but on the old bridge of Amencho Town, a warm bridge of “connection,” built by those living today with all their might, had been laid.
