On an early March morning, Kopo sat with his sewing kit spread out, brow furrowed .
“Spice, why are there two kinds of needles?”
“One has a hole for thread, one has a point for stabbing . Basic knowledge.”
News had arrived that a theme park in the city was launching its first new parade costumes in twenty-five years. Kopo had declared , “I want to make my entrance in a special costume too,” and dragged out fabric before dawn .
His fingers trembled as he held the needle. He stabbed himself again and again. What he ended up with was a strange lump of cloth, full of holes here and there.
Spice peered over from the side and, without a word, gently took the fabric from Kopo’s hands.
By evening, what came back was a small cape finished so carefully that not a single stitch could be seen.
“There’s no seam … anywhere.”
“It’s just invisible.”
Kopo put the cape on and turned around; the weeping cherry branches swayed in the spring breeze.
