Soft May sunlight traced a thin band through the gaps in the lattice window, into the “archive shed.” Dust rose from the stacked wooden boxes, and Kopo couldn’t help but rub his nose.
“…There’s this much of it?”
“A hundred years’ worth.”
Spice answered with a single line while switching on a palm-sized scanner. Small digital terminals lined the shed’s corner. Today was the first day of the “archive shed full digitization” project Spice had been secretly planning.
Kopo picked up a notebook. Its cover read, in brushed characters, “Meiji 35 — Dispute Record.” Flipping through the pages, he found, in careful handwriting, an account of how the town’s residents, once split between east and west, had fought fiercely over drawing water from Dragon God’s Lake.
“There was a fight like this, in this town?”
“There was.”
Sonchō had, at some point, settled onto the step at the entrance.
“The northeast side wanted to draw water from the lake to irrigate their fields. The southwest side firmly opposed it, believing it would anger the Dragon God. Shouting matches broke out every morning, and the autumn harvest festival was cancelled three years running.”
“So what happened?”
Sonchō laughed his “Feh-feh” and gestured with his chin toward the back of the shelf. There sat another notebook. When Kopo opened the one labeled “Record of Reconciliation,” it said the matter was settled by keeping, in that same shed, a record of both sides’ claims side by side, for all to see. At the end, in thick ink, was written: “Leaving it in a visible form becomes the vow not to fight.”
Spice silently held up his scanner. Light swept across the page, and a hundred years of words were quietly absorbed into the machine.
“Reconnecting a divided record. That’s what today is for.”
Kopo quietly returned the “Record of Reconciliation” to the shelf. Outside the lattice window, the weeping cherry’s leaves swayed in the May breeze.
Margin note: That night, on the first page of his blank notebook, Kopo wrote “Five minutes on foot to the archive shed,” and then, for a long time, couldn’t write anything on the next line.
