April 7th. Today is “Plan-a-Trip-Around-Japan Day.” Minico gripped his colored pencils, diligently drawing a circle centered on themselves across the map.
“Bro, look! It’s a plan to leave Amencho Town, cross this mountain, and go all the way to the sea. Someday, I want to go meet frogs from all over the world.”
Kopo peered at the map beside him, his expression turning a little complicated.
“The world, huh… But Minico, the outside world’s having a hard time right now — straits opening and closing, supplies not getting through. Seems like you need peace before you can go around Japan.”
The phrase “rejection of a ceasefire in peace talks,” which Kopo had seen in the city news, had pricked at his chest like a thorn . Lately, he’d begun to realize that his own wish to be “swooned over” was only possible because this town stayed peaceful.
Just then, the engineer Spice arrived, wearing a white coat, a stethoscope -like gadget hanging from his neck.
“…Today is World Health Day. This year’s theme is ‘One Health.’ Not just human health — animals, plants, this town’s Dragon God’s lake, everything is connected, and all of it should be healthy as one.”
Spice jotted small notes on “germs” and “water quality” in a corner of Minico’s map.
“Minico, for you to travel, it’s not just your own body that needs to be healthy — the water and air along the way need to be healthy too. If the world becomes unhealthy — unsettled — your journey will be cut short.”
“Feh-feh. Spice is right. Because everything is connected, even distant pain becomes your own.”
Under the weeping cherry tree, Sonchō narrowed his eyes. The once-reckless adventurer had once roamed not just Japan but the whole world — and there was a time, on some battlefield, when he nearly lost his “health of heart,” only to be saved by the purity of this town’s water.
“Minico, there’s no need to rush finishing your map. First, just watch today whether the friend beside you is smiling, whether the Dragon God of the lake is at peace. Watching over that is the first step to healing the world.”
Across the plaza, Keromi sang a new song called “Toward a Healthy Tomorrow,” while Bipiku quietly practiced yoga poses for her own mental care.
Watching from the sky, Hasshi murmured to himself.
(A trip around the world, huh. My wings could do it in no time — but if everyone’s not doing well, I won’t get a good meal — er, a good frog — I mean, a good meal — at the stations along the way.)
By evening, on the map Minico had drawn, instead of places he wanted to go, he had sketched little portraits of everyone in town.
“Bro, I’m going to start with a ‘health tour’ — making sure everyone in this town stays well, forever!”
Watching his little brother’s clumsy map, Kopo felt some of the anxiety inside him quietly dissolve .
The spring wind of Amencho Town sometimes carries the tension of a distant strait, but far more than that, it gently wraps around the warm resolve of those trying to protect the health right in front of them.
