One May afternoon, Keromi’s song had run just one verse too long.
The first tuft of fluff slid soundlessly in through the ventilation window of Spice’s workshop. Watching the white grains drift through the orange lamplight , Spice quietly said “ah,” then watched the order in which the measuring instruments’ displays went dark — starting from the smallest meter at the edge, falling away as if sinking into a dream. Only the old receiver at the back of the shelf held out to the last, pulsing thump , thump to keep its body heat, before it too slowly fell quiet.
It took a while to find a candle. In the deepest corner of a drawer, one thin emergency candle. It took three matches before an orange light finally came to life. Each time the flame flickered , the shadow of the wall’s measurement graph danced along with it. Mint, old oil, and dry wood mingled at the back of Spice’s nose.
inefficient , he thought. But he couldn’t bring himself to blow it out.
“Spice!”
Kopo, sliding the door open, stopped at the entrance. He started to say something, then closed his mouth. He breathed in slowly through his nose, taking in the scent that filled the workshop, and stood there a while.
“…Smells nice.”
“Keromi sang too long. It’ll be back by tomorrow.”
Kopo didn’t ask anything more than he needed to. When Spice tilted his chin toward a chair, the two sat facing each other across the candle, watching the wavering shadows in silence for a while.
Spice took a paper notebook from a drawer and let his pen move across it. No display, no backlight needed — just white paper. A faint smell of ink rose.
“Handwriting’s slow,” Kopo said.
“That’s why it stays.”
The candle tilted a little. Kopo pressed a finger against the wax and straightened it. Not speaking — just being there in the orange light — was the work of that night.
Margin note: The next morning, when the instruments woke up all at once, only the log from right before the shutdown never came back. Only Spice’s paper notebook holds that night’s “today.”
【Today’s Motif】
- May Snow (the Fluff Rebellion): A phenomenon unique to Amencho Town that occurs on May afternoons when Keromi sings too long. Electronic devices temporarily fall asleep, waking again the next morning. Only the log from right before the shutdown never comes back.
- Scent Education Day: May 19th, a day to value learning through the sense of smell. In a dark place, the nose can teach you something before your eyes can.
