The Gravity of May First

“The paper says you lose if you work today, big brother.”

Minico had opened the morning paper on a bench in the plaza , where the dew still lingered. The headline read “May Day.” Today, it seemed, workers all over the world put down their tools for a while.

“…Got it. I’ll put mine down too.”

Kopo stretched out on the bench. The May sky was stupidly blue.

(Perfect. Today I’m in full shutdown mode.)

Three minutes later.

His eyes had started drifting .

(…Isn’t that cobblestone over there a little loose? That cracked flowerpot — wouldn’t it be dangerous if someone stepped on it?)

“Big brother, your body’s itching again.”

“Is not.”

“Your forehead’s talking.”

He couldn’t argue with that.

From the direction of Dragon God’s Lake came a heavy thud, thud, and Mocchi appeared, carrying a large sack over his shoulder — clearly heavy just from the look of it.

“Mocchi, isn’t today your day off too?”

“Yeah. But the old woman upstream was trying to carry her load alone.”

“…I’ll help.”

Kopo got to his feet.

Mocchi smiled, his narrow eyes narrowing further.

“Stay right there and rest. I get why you want to stand up — but it doesn’t have to be today. I’ll go.”

“But—”

“The moment there’s a ‘but,’ you’re not resting.”

Wind passed through the plaza. From Dragon God’s Lake came the smell of water and new leaves, mingled together. Standing there, Kopo suddenly noticed something.

(It’s not that I want to help. It’s that if I don’t move, I feel like I won’t know who I am anymore — is that it? Am I scared?)

Mocchi shifted the sack on his shoulder and walked off toward the far side of the bridge. His back grew smaller and smaller in the May light.

Kopo collapsed back onto the bench.

“…Minico, doesn’t your body ever itch?”

“My arms and legs are short, so I’m used to giving up quickly.”

Kopo gazed vaguely at his brother’s profile .

(This one’s got a lot more nerve than I do.)

A single cloud floated in the May first sky. Going nowhere in particular, taking its time.

Margin note: That evening, where no one could see him, Kopo quietly and alone fixed the loose cobblestone at the edge of the plaza.

【Today’s Motif】

  • May Day: May 1st is International Workers’ Day, marking labor rights and solidarity movements worldwide, with roots in the 1886 Chicago strike for an eight-hour workday.
  • Golden Week: Japan’s cluster of spring holidays. May 1st falls within this stretch, when domestic and international travel both increase.

This is an English translation of “五月一日の重力”, part of Tales of Amencho Town (蛙鳴町奇譚).
