Looking out from the middle of Frog Mountain’s slope, Amencho Town’s rooftops fit neatly into the palm of a hand.
Kopo’s feet stopped again on his third attempt.
Thirty steps to the pointed summit stone. Worn smooth and round by rain, it was, in Kopo’s own private judgment, the closest point to the sky in all of Amencho Town. He always came here before deciding on something important, but today, his feet had already faltered on the steep slope and turned back three times since morning.
“Kopo, you stood out even from down there.”
Mocchi, carrying a bag of fertilizer , called up from the foot of the mountain. Today was Ichiryu-Manbai Day, the day he’d decided to plant the very first seed of the year into the soil.
“Shut up. This path’s slippery .”
“You’re the one who chose the slippery path.”
Mocchi knelt at the corner of the field, poked a small hole in the soil with a finger, and dropped in a single seed. Carefully, but with nothing special about it.
“…That’s it? Just one seed?”
“Today, one’s enough. Ichiryu-Manbai Day isn’t the day you turn one grain into ten thousand. It’s the day you put one grain in, properly.”
Kopo watched his hands. Mud-stained fingers gently covered over the small hollow in the soil. The smell of damp spring earth hung heavy at the bottom of the morning air.
“…Don’t you ever want to reach the summit?”
Mocchi stood and glanced , just once, at the spot where he’d planted the seed.
“You can get there. Even the two who climbed the world’s highest mountain — their first step was on mud too.”
Kopo had no idea where those words had come from.
On his fourth attempt, Kopo didn’t stop. Morning dew soaked his ankles, a stone grazed his knee, his breath grew ragged. Thirty steps became forty, but still he didn’t stop.
The moment his hand touched the summit stone, far below, Mocchi’s motion of pressing the next seed into the ground became a single point within the full panorama of Amencho Town.
“…Feh-feh. Only the one standing in the highest place knows the weight of the smallest grain.”
From the direction of the weeping cherry, only Sonchō’s laughter rode the wind.
Margin note: That night, a small grain of soil clung to the finger Kopo had touched to the summit stone. When it had gotten there, no one knew.
